Even if you have unbeatable home protection insurance in the Philippines, avoiding fires in your home is still best. Here are some tips to keep your home safe from fires.

Install smoke alarms

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in each bedroom. Test them regularly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

Have fire extinguishers in different areas

There should be a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, bedrooms, and other areas in the home where there are heat sources. Everyone should know how to use it in case of fire. Inspect it regularly to make sure it will work when needed.

Keep flammable items safe

Keep flammable materials away from heat sources. Store flammable liquids in appropriate containers and keep them in well-ventilated areas. These liquids release flammable vapors that may be hazardous to your health too.

Use electrical appliances properly

Follow the correct procedures in using electrical appliances. Turn them off or unplug them when you're not using them. Never leave heat-generating appliances unattended, such as flat irons and steamers. Have electrical appliances checked for defects and repair them immediately if there are any.

Check and maintain your gas stove

If you use a gas stove for cooking, check and maintain it regularly to avoid gas leaks. Always use the appropriate heat level for your cooking and never leave it unattended when in use. Use the right cooking equipment and utensils.

Don’t leave candles unattended

If you must light candles, don’t leave them unattended. Place them in fireproof, secure containers that won’t easy topple down. Keep them away from curtains and decors that may catch fire easily.

Smoke only in safe spots

Smoke in ventilated areas and use proper ashtrays. Never smoke in bed or while working on anything flammable.

Have an exit plan

Have an exit plan in case of fire and practice this escape route regularly. Conducting a regular fire drill at home won’t hurt. Have everyone participate and become familiar with the escape route.
