Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming a more familiar sight on Philippine roads, offering drivers a cleaner and quieter alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. As you see more sleek electric cars at stoplights, you might find yourself wondering if it is time to join the green revolution. While the environmental benefits are clear, the big question on your mind is likely the total cost of owning an EV.

Making the leap to sustainable driving is easier when you have a clear picture of the financial road ahead. Let’s break down the real-world expenses to see how they fit into your lifestyle.

An Overview of Electric Car Costs in the Philippines

Here’s a quick overview of the overall costs of owning an EV:

Let’s take a closer look at each one.

The Upfront Cost

Your EV journey starts with the purchase price. Today, electric car prices in the Philippines range from the budget-friendly (around PHP 600,000) to high-performance ones that cost 6M pesos or more.

While it is true that EVs historically had a higher sticker price or suggested retail price at the dealership, the gap is closing quickly. You might be spending more at the showroom, but you are also purchasing a vehicle that uses advanced technology to save you money every single day.

Once you’ve picked your dream car, what’s next? Let’s look at the other costs of owning an EV.

Maintenance: Saying Goodbye to Oil Changes

If you’re tired of frequent trips to the mechanic for oil changes, spark plugs, and belt replacements, you’re going to love the EV lifestyle. Because an electric motor has significantly fewer moving parts than a gasoline engine, there is simply less that can break down.

For example, some EV models have a preventive maintenance schedule (PMS) with intervals as long as 20,000 kilometers. Your first few service visits could cost less than PHP 3,000, which is often cheaper than a single synthetic oil change for a gas car (around PHP 6,000). You can even save more thanks to regenerative braking, a system where the motor helps slow the car down and recharges the battery at the same time.

Home Charging vs. Public Stations

How much does it cost to charge an electric car? One of the biggest advantages of owning an EV is spending less on energy. Instead of buying gasoline or diesel, you’ll pay for electricity to recharge your vehicle. Most EVs come with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard wall outlet, but many brands now include a faster Level 2 home charger.

Home charging is often the most economical option, especially if you charge overnight when electricity demand may be lower. Rates will vary depending on your provider’s per-kWh charge, but they currently cost around PHP 15 per kWh.

The public charging network is also growing fast. You’ll find chargers at major malls (where some charging is free), gasoline recharge stations, and mobility hubs. While public fast-charging costs more—around PHP 22 to PHP 35 per kWh—fast chargers can add 100 kilometers of range in as little as 30 minutes.

When comparing the cost per kilometer to that of gasoline cars, EVs emerge as the clear winners. Upon charging, driving with an EV can cost around PHP 3.65 - 5.70 per km, while gasoline cards can cost around PHP 4.33 - 7.65 per km.

Registration and Government Perks

Beyond the maintenance costs of owning an EV, the Philippine government also offers some perks to help you save on fees through the Electric Vehicle Industry Act (EVIDA). When you register your EV with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), you are entitled to a 5% discount on registration fees.

The perks don’t stop at the wallet; they also save you time. EVs are currently exempt from number coding. This means you can drive your EV every day of the week in Metro Manila without worrying about being flagged. You’ll even get special license plates to show off your eco-friendly status.

Battery Considerations

The battery is the most expensive cost of owning an EV. The good news is that modern batteries are built to last, with manufacturers designing their systems to reach over 1.2 million kilometers of driving. Most brands offer generous warranties, which can reach up to 8 years or 150,000 kilometers.

While a full battery replacement out of warranty could cost up to P1 million, this can be a rare occurrence if you follow simple electric car maintenance tips.

Understanding the battery is key, but it’s also important to be realistic about what happens if you do need a repair.

While EVs require less maintenance, actual repairs can be more expensive than those of traditional cars. This is because EV parts are often specialized and require highly trained technicians to handle high-voltage systems. Currently, labor costs for EV repairs can be up to three times higher than for gas cars. Additionally, because the technology is still growing in the Philippines, waiting for specialized parts can sometimes add a few extra days to your repair timeline.

On the brighter side, EVs can have lower repair costs in the long term after the three-year mark. By then, EV services can cost an average of PHP 25,000, and gasoline-vehicle services can cost an average of PHP 37,760. Regardless, having comprehensive protection is vital to ensure the cost of owning an EV doesn’t lead to a massive, unexpected bill.
