Car Aircon Maintenance Tips

  • Before starting the engine, make sure a/c switch is "OFF".  When in "ON" position, some of the electrical current is already used by the a/c causing "hard-starting" in some occasion.

  • Roll down windows (and sun-roof, if equipped) , especially when the car is parked in an open area, to release trapped hot air from the passenger cabin.

  • Turn the a/c "ON" and close the windows (and sun-roof) after 2-3 minutes. The trapped air should have been driven out by this time.

  • Dust and dirt accumulate inside the air ducts. Moisture from the a/c operation makes it an excellent medium for bacteria and fungus growth. Regular cleaning at least once a year will minimize growth of disease carrying organisms.

  • Air freshners evaporate at high temperature when the car is parked under the sun, or even in an open area. The chemicals eventually condense to liquid or solid state when they pass the cold evaporator area.  These chemicals may enhance growth of micro-organisms in the air duct.  Sometimes, they are themselves harmful to humans and pets when inhaled.

  • Inside the air duct, some cars are fitted with foam-like air filter and/or insulator. In time, these foam-like materials will become brittle as the car gets older, disintegrating into black/gray particles. When blower is set to "HIGH", these particles are blown into the passenger cabin and inhaled by the occupants. There are no scientific evidence yet, but these may cause respiratory problem(s).

  • These are the major reasons why the a/c should be subjected to thorough cleaning as often as possible.
